A Christmas Carol Victorian England Wiki page Reports Cooper
The early 19th century was an unusual time in the British Empire. Charles Dickens used the early 1800s as the backdrops for A Christmas Carol. In pairs, you will be researching a topic related to the 1800s in Britain and creating a wiki page for a TEST grade. Your pages will be a combination of data (rewritten in your own words) and pictures and or video clips. Along with your research you will need to include a Works Cited listing of internet sources used for this assignment, formatted according to MLA citation rules (see posters in classroom). This wiki page must be finished by 2/12/10.

Transportation in England (roads, trains, steamboat, ships)
Styles of dress and hair for women and men (rural and city life; a wealthy lady and gentleman)
Child labor in England (kinds of jobs, apprenticeships, working conditions, wages, and laws to control child labor)
Education for poor/wealthy (country and city)
Medical problems (plagues, epidemics, causes of disease, doctors, medical practices)
Publishing industry (methods of printing; magazines and books; copywright laws; Blackwood's magazine, Edinburgh Review, Quarterly Review, Westminster Review, The Spectator, Punch)
Living condtions in the cities and country (types of jobs, averge wages, apprenticeships, working conditions, family life, number of children, life expectancy, types of housing - include poor and polite society nad typical food)
Laws and prisons (include the Hulks, debtor's prison, transportation of criminals to New South Wales and Australia, Marshalsea prison, and executions)
Religious and moral values of the times (major religion of time, Christianity, family life, idea of prosperity, work ethic, human dignity, moral ethics - what was right and wrong?)
Customs (weddings, funerals, social gatherings, pubs, inns, festivals) and Entertainment (music, instruments, games, dances, sports, walks, tete-a-tete, drama, public speeches) - country and city
Artists and their painting styles and subject matter
British law and social reform (social prejudice, slave trade - 1807; Black slave trade - 1833; reform law of 1832; penal code reformed; The Chartists and The Trade Unionists brought reform)
Changes in Technology: Metallurgy (iron and steel industry); Coal mining and electricity (changes in life styles); Civil engineering (bridges, roads, equipment, Crystal Palace of 1851); Textile industry (cotton and woolens); Chemical engineering (textiles, soap, glass, dyes, medicines, and makeup)
