Changes in Victorian Technology

The Victorian Era was a time of prosperity and broad imperial expansion along with great political reform. The Victorian Era is also known to some as the "Second English renaissance" but is actually the Beginning of Modern Times. Victorian technology went through many changes before the end of the 19th century. These Changes took place in many different parts of technology, from railroads and steel to electricity and chemicals the changes were all over the Victorian age. Many changes in technology made everyday life somewhat easier for a person living at that time. The Victorian technology worked out to form in "phases" which is almost like a time-line of events that had a major effect on the technology. It was during this time that parts of the world started to convert from having an economy based around animal or human labour to machine based manufacturing.

♦The Eotechnic (c. 1660)♦

Steam Powered Locomotive
Steam Powered Locomotive
The Eotechnic age was an age where wind and water were the main movers and technological knowledge was low. Builders and engineers at the time would craft their boats, wagons, windmills, etc. out of wood because wood was the main material at the time. At the time wagons and Galleons were the primary tool used. During this time a lot of technological advancements were made. A large advancement in technology was that Thomas Newcomen had built the first commercially successful steam engine in 1712, which was later improved in 1775 by James Watt. This invention made it possible to keep deep coal mines free of water and was the
first significant power source other than wind and water. Towards the end of the age some big inventions were created, the first Trans Atlantic Cable was finished. Cathode Rays were discovered, and Edwin Drake struck oil in Pennsylvania. In relation to Edwin Drake striking oil, Etienne Lenoir demonstrated the first successful gasoline engine .

♦The Paleotechnic age (c. 1860)♦

The Paleotechnic age was an improvement form the previous age by adding more advances to the Victorian technology. During the Paleotechnic era they began to use coal and steam as their primary movers. During this age there were some military advances including the machine gun. The machine gun made military more powerful and more proficient. The developement of iron-making techniques improved the ability to make refined coal.

♦Civil Engineering♦

London Bridge
The London Bridge was built in 1824 to 1827. A man by the name John Rennie supplied the designs for the bridge who was an architect of Southwark and Waterloo Bridges.

The Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace was constructed in 1851 for the British's Great Exhibition held in London. The Great Exhibition was a way for the British to showcase their industrial, military and economic superiority to the world. The British had sent out invitations internationally by sending them to almost all of the colonized world. They also wanted to showcase their achievements alongside the "less civilized" countries. The Crystal palace was made designed by Sir Joseph Paxton within ten days. The original layout was an enormous iron gian with over a million feet of glass. There were more then 13'000 exhibits were displayed and viewed by over 6'200'000 visitors to the exhibition. The visitor's profits from the event allowed for the foundation of public works such as the Science Museum and the National History Museum. The Palace was divided into a series of courts that was represented by the history of art and architecture from the ancient Egypt through the Renaissance, also exhibits from industry and the natural world.

♦THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY

The textile industry imroved greatly in the Victorian era. During the Victorian era, the first simplified sewing machine was made. Victorian industrialized clothing products, and started to use machines to manufacture products instead of humans and/or animal labor. The textile industry also helped the prices of clothing go down and become more affordable.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING :)

For chemical engineering we had trouble finding things on the internet as far as advances on them. From what we we already know, we have infered that during the victorian ages, they found out more about germs, common and local illnesses, and used alternative soaps made from different materials. Women, as far as makeup had simple blushes and used the kinds of makeup that was available to them.
