Victorian Society Project : Living Conditionsstreetchildren1890s.jpg

- In Great Britain during the Victorian era the population boomed , The population tripled by the end of the era but people can only guess why.
Employment
- Jobs were scarce in the Victorian era due to the population boom
- Many came from far and wide in search for a new life
Child Labor
- Many children were expected to work for long hours for minimum wage in order to support there families
Housing Scarcity
- Housing was scarce and therefore Expensive, And since hardly no one made more than minimum wage the homeless population was on a steady increase and overcrowded conditions were abundant around major urban centers
- Because of the housing scarcity many people would live in crowded tenemants , The living conditions were very poor, Many people lived in filth in poor sanitary conditions
Homeless children
- There were many children who were forced to live on the streets
- Most children had only way to survive,Which was to steal food or money
Society's view on the poor
- Many respectable and upper to middle class victorians looked down on the poor, Some thought that schools would be the answer to the homeless and criminal children, but others argued saying that since Illiteracy did not cause the problem how could Literacy fix it

Rural England
- Life was slow in rural England, To most villagers there humble village was there entire world, Until the invention of the Steam Engine, Fields were plowed 20 times faster travel allowed people to market there crops further, And factories began popping up all around the country side. The villages once islands in the fields were now . All though it may have been great, Bot now there was little need for farmhands and the farmhands that were laid off wandered into a city to find work. This is one of the main reasons for the massive population boom, People were looking for work and the cities were one of the few places that had it.
