Since the 1800's in Britain, clothing and hair styles have had a tremendous change. If you look back about 200 years ago there is a big difference.
WOMEN
As you can see in the picture above, these women wore loads of clothing. The dresses that they are wearing are called, à la mamelouk. When women wear these dresses they have to have their legs completley covered. Their legs were usually covered by black stockings or later by pants. The lower part of the dress is called a, hoop. Hoops were a popular addition to 1800's, but later slimmer skirts and dresses were worn. The upper torso of the dress is called a corset, a corset is used to suck in the stomach so you can appear slimmer. It is also used as an accessorie. The sleeves on the dresses were a so called a, "fashion statement". The sleeves are very slim, this gave way to called, "leg 'o mutton" sleeves by
the end of Queen Victoria's Reign. What the women wore on the head was of their own. The hats and bonnets consisted of, large hats decorated with feathers and flowers and close capped bonnets like the women above have on their heads. These bonnets soon became a need-to-have garment. The hair-styles women in the 1800's used to wear were pinn curls, finger waves, braids and tight curls. For younger ladies and little girls they wore mostly bangs and coiled hair. This was made to believe that, long-hair was a mark of femininity. The shoes that the women wore were mainly brown boots, antique satin shoes, and two inch heels.

MEN

Its obvious that the clothes gentlemen wear today are very different what they wore in the 1800's, right? In the 1800's men wore silk stockings under their pants. They called pants, "slacks". If you werent wealthy, you would wear wool socks. Most men of the 1800's wore trousers Most men wore long dress coats, they were usually black and a corset was worn with them. As years passed, the long dress coat wasn't popular anymore but instead, most men wore, "white tie and tails". "Tail", means, a daytime coat. As you can see in the second picture the man is wearing checks or plaid. Checks and plaid were popular also. A scarf around the neck was popular with checks and plaid. Most men wore scarfs around their necks like their female counterparts. The shoes that the menn wore were black shiny boots or the common dress shoe, like today. The hairstyles men used to wear were, cropped cut, caeser cut, and if you were an older gentlemen, the longer the hair, the more conservative you were. Another hairstyle was usually worn by Romantic painters and poets, curly and wild. During the 1800's, a lot of men wore top hats above their heads. Most of the time the hat covered the whole head so the hair wasn't visible.

The first hairstyle on the left is called a Caeser cut, is you look at his hair, the sides go up like the wreaths Julius Caesar wore around his head. The second cut is of Gericult, the romantic painter. His hair is curly and wild. This is a self portrait of himself. They are also wearing similar clothing.
